4.        Earn the Junior Aide Patch by working with Brownie Troop 2108 to help them bridge to Junior Girl Scouts

5.        Plan and host activities at three Senior Citizen facilities

6.        Help several Senior Citizens with chores

What We Did:

1.        After brainstorming a lot of ideas, the girls decided to work with Senior Citizens.

2.        Completed the ‘My Community’ badge by learning more about Eagan, including opportunities for Senior Citizens (Sep 2004).

3.        Senior Citizens at the Realife Retirement home helped us earn the ‘Across Generations’ badge. We read advice columns, newspaper clippings, and ads from 50 year old newspapers; learned about Girl Scouts in the 1930’s and 1940’s; tasted old family recipes, and learned a lot of interesting things about what life was like when the senior citizens were young. (Nov 2004)

4.        Over their three years as Juniors, the girls earned all four Signs.  They completed the Sign of the Sun and Sign of the World this year which included making flag pins to give to Senior Citizens, learning about the environment, and completing a service activity. (2004-2005)

5.        The troop decided to earn the Junior Aide Patch by working with a Brownie troop. They met with the leader of Troop 2108, led the troop in earning the ‘Friends are Fun’ Try-It, helped them bridge, and worked with them on a service project.

6.        Hosted a Valentine’s Party at the Nan McKay Senior Citizen High Rise.  The girls gave hand made Valentines and flag pins to each person who attended, entertained them with singing and flute playing, made a craft together, visited with them, and made heart shaped cookies for each person to frost and decorate.  (2 hours, Feb 2005)

7.        Led a Bingo event at Realife Retirement Home and visited with the residents. The prizes were a huge hit, including performing a song selected by the winner, hand made snowmen, or marbles. Each person received a flag pin. For a treat, the girls provided home made cookies and lemonade. (2 hours, Feb 2005)

8.        Held a free craft event at the Eagan Community Center for Senior Citizens. Helped each attendee make several crafts they could keep or give to a grand child. Visited with the Senior Citizens and gave them flag pins (2 hours, Mar 2005)

9.        Each girl helped one or more Senior Citizens with chores such as moving from the hospital back to their home, cleaning, shopping, and much more. (3-6 hours, Mar-May 2005)
